A page for Darkwood 2 just went live on Steam, showing that a surprise sequel is on the way for the survival horror cult classic.

Darkwood is an absolutely fantastic survival horror game that's inspired a cult following, where the protagonist is trapped in an overgrown forest that chokes out all life. The sun barely filters through the trees, the few survivors are mutated and often malicious, and then things get even worse at night. The only way to survive is to scavenge during the day and hide in a cabin at night, clutching a shotgun and crying at every loud noise. The game came out in 2017, and it seemed like an end to the self-contained story ... until a page went up on Steam for a sequel.

The developer is Ice-Pick Lodge, the team behind the Pathologic series, and the title is published by Hooded Horse. There's no release date as of yet, so we'll likely be waiting for some time for Darkwood 2.

The story is set a few years after the original Darkwod, and it appears like there'll be much more of a nautical element for all my thalassophobes out there. The Aral Sea is dying in the wake of the Soviet Union's collapse, and a mysterious forest has sprung up in the sea bed. consuming biological labs, shipwrecks, power stations, and marshland.

It's a pleasant Halloween surprise to know that more Darkwood is on the way, but we'll have to wait and see what details emerge regarding launch.
