Oh God, oh fuck, they put Dead Space in my Helldivers 2
The newest Helldivers 2 update, Devoid of Liberty, adds two new enemies to the Illuminate and I don't much care for them
Helldivers 2 is known for its three enemy factions, each offering their own style of gameplay. The Terminids are big bugs, armored with chitin and armed with sharp limbs and crushing jaws. The Automatons are cruel robots, known for their sharpshooter aim and armored vehicles. The Illuminate have always been the rogue alien faction, with flying saucers, tripod walkers, and high-tech shields, but they've never been quite as well-rounded as the other two enemies. Today's new update, Devoid of Liberty, fixes that by adding new enemies to the Illuminate roster, and oh my God, I am so scared.
The Illuminate now have two new units: the Wretch and the Crusher. The Crusher is a massive, Lovecraftian-looking giant holding a club that can one-shot even the most heavily armored Helldiver. That's pretty scary, but I'm really concerned about the second new unit: the Wretch, because excuse me, that looks just like a god damned Necromorph. Wretches move in packs and have a big jump that allows them to close the distance, but I've learned a thing or two from my ol' buddy Isaac Clarke, and I've already had great success by aiming for the limbs.
The Illuminate were originally a much more peaceful race; in the first game, they were depicted as desperately defending themselves by using their highly sophisticated technology to cloak and shield themselves from Super Earth's finest. In Helldivers 2, they are now much more malicious and actively out for revenge. So far, they used the Meridian wormhole as a projectile, shattering planets as they launched it at Super Earth. Then, they followed that up with a full-scale invasion of our homeworld. They've since started ripping the southern quadrant of space apart under a veil of mysterious energy known as the Void.
You can find the full patch notes for 7.0 here; the update also adds 150 new levels for progression, the Warhammer 40K crossover Warbond, and a much more active presence from the Super Earth Armed Forces – including the ability to hug them, which is good, because after getting crushed by a Crusher, I definitely need one.
