A History of Helldivers 2: The Terminid Emergence
Helldivers 2's Galactic War began in March 2184, and the Terminid Control System was one of the earliest campaigns.
After the Cyborgs and Bugs were soundly defeated at the end of the First Galactic War, Super Earth scientists made the wise and well-thought out decision to preserve the Bugs. These creatures proved to be an invaluable source of E-710, a chemical capable of powering FTL drives. Patriotic scientist and overall hero Dr. Hank Ploeg established facilities where these creatures could be safely farmed. Unfortunately, in a development no one could have seen coming, they evolved into the current Terminid swarm and escaped containment.
The second Galactic War began in earnest on Feb. 8, 2184, taking place a hundred years after Super Earth’s decisive victories against the foolish, rebellious Cyborgs, the destructive and tyrannical Bugs, and the perfidious Illuminate empire. Super Earth had enjoyed a century of prosperity and peace, but top brass never truly let their guard down, as they knew that constant vigilance was required to ensure the continued success of managed democracy.
When Automatons, the dreadful and mechanical offspring of the Cyborg rebellion, sprung up in the Severin sector, Super Earth Armed Forces and freshly thawed Helldivers were ready to hold the line. Perhaps a more complicated question was that of the Terminids, an insectoid species that had erupted across the western frontier.
The enemies of freedom quickly colluded, creating a two-front war across the northern quadrants of the galaxy. The Helldivers, a valiant fighting force of special ops soldiers kept on ice for this exact contingency, were put in the unenviable position of having to play triage. There was no chance Super Earth could apply its significant might against one foe without risking an invasion from the other.
There was a clear solution for this unprecedented attack on managed democracy: the Helldivers. And so, the conflict began with some early scraps, with Helldiver Command focusing on containing each threat and preventing further incursions into Super Earth space.
