Last week was Steam Next Fest, and we wrote a ton about game demos that you should download and put on your radar. But, all of these recommendations exist in a few different places, like quick blogs, or genre-specific collections.

With Steam Next Fest now done for October, we wanted to jump in one last time here to give you a glimpse at all the different games we recommend from the event. Some of them still have demos available, but all of them are available to wishlist if you want a reminder once they finally release.

Final Sentence

Image: Button Mash

Is the demo still up? Yes

Final Sentenceis a battle royale typing simulator where the penalty for typos is a bullet to the head. Competitors enter a dimly lit room and sit at typewriters where they transcribe everything from prose to dead memes like their lives depend on it. Because, well, they do.

Monsters Are Coming! Rock & Road

Is the demo still up? Yes

Monsters Are Coming! Rock & Road is a genre-mashing game that's equal parts tower defense, city-builder, roguelike and survivorslike. It's a lot of moving pieces that come together in a fascinating way to make one of our most anticipated games.

Desktop Explorer

Is the demo still up? Yes

Remembering passwords and navigating context menus has never been as spooky as it is in Desktop Explorer. The demo is exactly long enough to give you a taste of both the gameplay and the unexpectedly terrifying story hidden in this deceptively deep game.

Ambrosia Sky

A sci-fi environment left abandoned, with books and personal materials scattered on the floor. The scene is lit by a circular window through which we can see a pink sky and strange land masse

Is the demo still up? Yes

Yes, it's reductive to call Ambrosia Sky something like PowerWash Simulator: Dead Space Edition, but … that's also kind of accurate? You're an investigator sent to a space colony where everyone has died and you're armed only with a glorified water pistol while you try to figure out what happened.

Korridor

A bulbus knight rams into demons in Korridor

Is the demo still up? Yes

Korridor takes those game ads you've probably seen while scrolling on Instagram and, in a shocking twist, lets you actually play that game without a barrage of intrusive ads. It's a return to the endless runner genre, but with more chain guns and demons.

Cairn

Is the demo still up? Yes

Aava climbing a rock face in Cairn

Climbing games are a trend, but few of them put as much work into creating a realistic experience as Cairn. Explore sweeping cliffs, climb through hostile weather, and achieve glorious heights. Plan your route up the dangerous mountains ahead, and be prepared to adapt to the circumstances by managing pitons and tracking your resources.

Evac Bay 09

A giant eye floating in space and looking through the space station window in Evac Bay 09
Image: Agustín Balmer

Is the demo still up? Yes

Evac Bay 09 starts with a meteor hitting your space station, and then all Evac Bay 09 asks you to do is walk from evacuation bay 01, where you start, to evacuation bay 09, where an escape pod waits for you. And, at first glance, Evac Bay 09 looks like a hallway simulator. Until the cleaning robot you pass changes size out of nowhere and, when passing through the hatch to the next bay, you find yourself … back in evacuation bay 01. What follows is a time-loop-y, spooky, spot-the-difference walk where even linear space isn’t what it seems.
