Should you take the Ice or Forest path in The Divide in Donkey Kong Bananza?

The Divide asks you to choose between The Freezer and Forest layers in Donkey Kong Bananza. Here's how the choice works and which you should pick.

Should you take the Ice or Forest path in The Divide in Donkey Kong Bananza?

The Divide is the fourth layer you'll reach in Donkey Kong Bananza (not including the Ingot Isle prologue), and it offers you a choice: do you want to go to the Freezer Layer or the Forest Layer? That's a pretty sizeable choice, as it'll determine what your next several hours of gameplay look like in Banaza, as well as what order you get some impactful powers in. But, before we continue with the guide, we can confirm: this choice does not lock you out of either layer, and you will visit Freezer and Forest back-to-back. You're only choosing which of the layers you want to visit first.

If that's all you came here for, god speed and enjoy! But if you'd like a little more advice on which you should pick, keep reading.

In this Big Friendly guide, we'll offer some advice on which of The Divide layers you should pick first in Donkey Kong Banaza.

Should you go to the Freezer Layer or Forest Layer first?

The Freezer Layer is SL 500 while the Forest Layer is SL 600. Technically, that means the Freezer Layer should come first. But this really just seems like it's for numbering reasons, not any kind of story thing. And after going to Freezer first ourselves, we'd actually recommend the opposite. I suggest you go to the Forest Layer first.

Why, you ask? Because the Forest Layer is where you'll get the Ostrich Banaza, which is truly cursed, but allows you to hover and glide. This is a huge boon for exploration, and is a really useful tool. The Zebra Bananza comes from the Freezer Layer, and it's fine. It has its uses (it's really fast and can run over thin bridges), don't get me wrong, but it's a lot less universally helpful than the Ostrich.

As for what happens when you complete your chosen layer, you'll get dropped into another interim layer called The Junction. This place is impassible without completing both Freezer and Forest (or sequence breaking). So after reaching The Junction, you'll be told to teleport back to The Divide and take the other layer on. You're not gonna miss anything either way, there are no exclusive rewards that we've seen, it's purely whether you want to get the Ostrich or Zebra Bananza first.
