A goodbye

A goodbye

When we started Rogue almost exactly one year ago, one of the most exciting things about having our own site was getting to choose what stories to cover and how. Once we were no longer dependent on the algorithm, the games we wrote about and the stories we told were completely decided by us. It's a remarkable thing that you, our supporters, allow us to do.

Over the course of this year, I've gotten to write stories that were important to me. I wrote about games I loved and I wrote stories that centered the human cost of corporate greed — and wrote about more layoffs than I care to count. And as time went on, I found myself more and more passionate about that kind of story.

I got to explore how we got to where we are today in my Cyberpunk series — which is by no means over. But slowly, I drifted away from video games as my starting – or even ending, if we're being honest – point. The world kept getting worse and I just kept finding new and exciting things to be angry about. And I shared those things with you.

I mean, my last article was about lettuce.

To be clear, it's an important topic – slavery and corruption and bribery in the context of our current literal shitstorm – but it's just not about video games no matter how much I force a tortured justification into it.

These are the stories I'm interested in telling, though, and they just feel out of place here at Rogue. So I'll be stepping back to let the site stay true to its original purpose of centering, promoting, and enjoying video games.

This isn't a forever goodbye. Rogue will always be important to me and I'm sure I'll drop in from time to time. But for now, I'm going to explore those other stories. I'm still old and grumpy, so I'll always have lots to say — I'm just not sure where I'll be saying it yet. Watch my Bluesky to find out with me!
