Xbox Labs is a new initiative announced after the rapid rise of AI decompiling tools
As more AAA teams push for AI in their game dev pipelines, Xbox seems to be dancing around saying it outloud
Today, Asha Sharma sent a company wide email out to the entire Xbox staff announcing their newest initiative: Xbox Labs. This new stand-up is an arm of "game makers, engineers and scientists" within Xbox to continue to pursue new technologies when it comes to the way that games are made, preserved, and experienced.
As stated in the email, this is directly in response to the massive storm of recent decompiled and rebuilt games, most of which have included some amount of vibe coding. While the email doesn't directly say that Xbox Labs is being built out to become Xbox's AI vibe coding department, it certainly feels like 446 words trying to dance around saying it out loud.

Instead of specifically saying that they're gunning to AI to replace people, Xbox says that they're trying to ensure that their teams "help shape what these new technologies make possible," by getting in at the ground level of any new and developing technologies.
This news comes at a time where Xbox has been laying off a historical number of people. The letter closes with a hopeful statement from Sharma about staying committed to their core pillars, making games, hardware, and their IP, reiterating that this new division of the company is meant to spin off and work on these new ideas while continuing to focus on the work their existing teams are doing.
According to reporting from Bloomberg, Epic Games has internally delayed a game for Disney and is asking its developers to use more AI to wrap up the project faster. In fact, Epic Games has reportedly told its developers to not use any more handwritten code, prioritizing Claude-written code over human programming on the project.
With any luck, the Xbox Labs experiment won't lead to the next Claude co-developed nightmare.
