Xbox will publish Kojima's next action-espionage game Physint
Hideo Kojima's next big project gets picked up by Xbox following PlayStation's exit.
Originally announced at the January 2024 State of Play, Physint is an upcoming action-espionage game from Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions. The title is a return to form for the game developer auteur, returning to the genre after spending most of his career as the visionary behind the Metal Gear franchise at Konami before the two parted ways. When it was announced, Physint was intended to be developed by Kojima Productions and published by PlayStation Studios, similarly to Death Stranding.
In a late Wednesday tweet, Kojima revealed that back in mid-June, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) reached out to him "unexpectedly" to let him know that they'd be cancelling the Physint project.
As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. Kojima went on to say that after spending the last 3 months trying to determine the best path forward for the game, Kojima Productions has partnered with Xbox Games Studios to publish the independent title.
This is coming from an existing relationship between the two companies with Xbox already on the books to publish OD, the game announced in partnership between Kojima and film director Jordan Peele of Get Out, Nope, and Us fame.
In their own press release, Xbox added that the relationship between Kojima Productions and Xbox is stronger than ever; the pair are continuing to collaborate on projects "across film and television to bring new stories to broader audiences."
