The new Crusader Kings 3 expansion dives into the wild history of Christianity

There’s a Steam achievement for the new Crusader Kings 3 expansion that might pique your interest. It’s called Papal Bull, and the requirement is: “Make your Puppet Pope sleep with your spouse” and I think that’s beautiful. By God Alone released on September 30th, and Paradox Interactive provided Rogue with a review key so I could check out the new religious-themed content.

Crusader Kings 3 is a grand strategy game that puts you in charge of a noble family during the middle ages. It’s up to you to lead your family to greatness by managing the smallfolk, expanding territory, holding off rivals, making alliances, and preventing distant cousins and other disgruntled family members from fomenting their own rebellions. The thing that makes Crusader Kings 3 really work, at least for me, over other strategy games are the role-playing elements. Your character has traits, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. 

As your game progresses, events will pop up, and these tend to be of a personal nature. A humble, stolid monarch will focus on their studies, raise their heirs, and search for betrayal in their royal court. A wily seductress will manage her affairs and lie about the paternity of her children. A witch will dance under the moon. By God Alone focuses on religion, and that means introducing a lot of content focused around faith, heresy, schisms within the church, and spiritual fulfilment.
