Doom: The Dark Ages' Revelations DLC is a heartbreakingly excellent addition
Revelations comes at the worst possible time
The modern Doom trilogy, which started in 2016, is a series I fall deeper in love with every playthrough. Where 2016 started perfect, I had reservations after completing both Eternal and Dark Ages – which replays helped calm entirely.
Revelations is the latest DLC for the latest game, and adds tons of new levels and challenges, as well as a genuinely game-changing melee weapon that takes the tankier combat of Dark Ages and transforms it back into the speedy, dash-heavy Eternal gameplay.
The result is some of the best combat arenas and coolest levels id Software has made yet in this trilogy. But it comes at the worst possible time, as Xbox gutted id Software the day before the expansion's launch. (Many devs have said they're extremely proud of the expansion – as they should be – and encouraged players to support it and their remaining colleagues at id).
The idea of Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations should be familiar to any Metroid fan, as it starts with the Doom Slayer fully kitted up before he is then humbled and sent down to Purgatory. His shield and armor destroyed, the Slayer takes on a sexy barbarian look, and claims a new weapon to help him escape: the Chain Spear.
