I'm being priced out of my favorite cozy game
I love Palia, but the mounting microtransactions mean I'm logging in less and less
I started playing Palia in the summer of 2023, when the game entered early access, and I’ve played it on and off ever since. The player is a human that mysteriously emerged from the magical ether into a cozy fantasy world with golems, elves, and mercantile cats. It’s up to you to investigate this world’s history and dangers while building a lovely house, farming delicious crops, and romancing the villagers. The problem with Palia is the cost, and for a free-to-play adventure set in such a cozy world, I’m feeling increasingly uncomfortable with the game’s monetization.
Developer Singularity 6 was open with their monetization model from the start; in 2022, the developer released a blog explaining how in-game transactions would work and why. “With Palia, we’ll only be monetizing cosmetic content. At first, this will focus on character clothing and costumes, but we’ll evaluate more spaces as time goes on.” In 2025, Singularity 6 added the “small shift” of “gameplay-oriented purchases” by adding courier pets, companions who can help carry a bit of your inventory back to town.
Now, Singularity 6 has gone a step further: you can buy extra storage for your plot. This isn’t a few bucks for a little quality of life: it’s a stacking transaction. Each storage upgrade costs $5, topping out at 25. If you want an extra 100,000 storage space, that’ll run you over a hundred bucks.
