Soulframe: Preludes is now open to the masses
Soulframe: Preludes is still early access, but players no longer need an invite to explore the lush realm of Alca
Soulframe is a fantasy RPG made by Digital Extremes, set in a world of myth and magic. You play as the Envoy in a world called Alca, an adventurer cast from the skies by an invading force known as the Ode. You awaken upon the shores of Midrath and slowly gain your bearings in a world inspired by faerie tales, ancient kingdoms, and lush nature. Soulframe is still in development and is in a beta state called Soulframe: Preludes. Up until now access has been locked unless you can score an invite. Today, that changes – the game is now open to all players on PC.
Digital Extremes is best known for Warframe, the incredibly dense and satisfying sci-fi action game. Soulframe borrows a few of Warframe's systems (hence the name) but it feels entirely different top to bottom. The fantasy setting is the most obvious contrast – instead of a hypermobile robot ninja, you play a slower character who has to nock and draw a bow or set their feet and hold up a shield. It plays very much like a MMORPG, but with less emphasis on social elements. It also has some really bizarre and beautiful worldbuilding and dialogue that I adore, where it feels like you're playing a story from an ancient scroll come to life.
Right now, Soulframe Preludes is only available on PC. While the game is in an early access state, there's still a ton to explore. Digital Extreme just launched Preludes 17, a patch that includes the eerie region of the Veiled Lands, a new wolf mount you raise from a pup, and an underground labyrinth of mining tunnels to explore and loot.
